Castles

There are numerous curias and castles in Hrvatsko Zagorje, some of which are today opened as museums for visitors. The best known castles in that category are Veliki Tabor, Trakošćan and Bežanec

Veliki Tabor castle

Near Desinić there is a fortified castle of Veliki Tabor. The first tower was built in the 12th century, other towers were built in the 15th and 16th century, and today’s look was achieved in the 1820. Most notable owners and inhabitants were the Celjski and the Ratkaj counts and the great Croatian painter Oton Iveković. Special feature of the castle is a big well which is 31 meter deep and the big rustic hall with halberds. UNESCO rated the castle in the highest category of monuments. Today castle is a museum with permanent collection.

Trakošćan castle

Trakošćan castle was built in the 13th century and has changed several owners. Through centuries, among the owners were the Celjski counts, general Jan Vitovac, Ivaniš Korvin and sub-governor Ivan Gyulay. Sub-marshal Juraj V. Drašković renewed the castle and turned its environment into a romantic garden. Today the castle belongs to the Republic of Croatia and it’s a museum with permanent collection

Bežanec castle

Bežanec castle is the nearest castle to Krapinske Toplice, arranged as a hotel, but it is opened for visitors only with an advance announcement.

Museums

The Neanderthal museum in Krapina

Size of 1200 m2, this is one of the most modern museums in Croatia and this part of Europe. You can expect an interesting story about life and culture of the Neanderthal man in Krapina, numerous multimedia contents and above all a unique architecture. Museum is connected with the original founding site of the Neanderthal man, on the Hušnjakovo hill. Museum is in Krapina, 15 km (about 15 minutes) away from Villa Magdalena hotel. Museum “Staro selo”, Kumrovec

Kumrovec Museum “Staro selo” is an opened ethno village – the sight of how the village of Zagorje looked like in 19th century.

 

Wineries

Zagorje is characterized by outstanding natural features, so its not surprising that in these areas vines and vineyards were cultivated and raised for centuries. Representing some of the most famous wineries in Krapina-Zagorje County:

  • Winery “Vuglec Breg” near Krapina Spa, on the way to Krapina, restored tourist village with original Zagorje houses, vineyards and wine cellars. They offer premium wines and champagnes.
  • Winery “Vinski vrh”, located on the road from Zlatar Bistrica to Novi Marof surrounded by the beautiful landscape. As a part of the place is the winery Libertin. Wine offer: Riesling, Pinot Grey, Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Muscat Blanc, Traminac, Chardonnay
  • Bodren, located on the way from Pregrada to Hum on Sutla, winner of six gold medals at the World Championships with the Decanter World Wine Awards in London for dessert white wine, ice vintage: Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Grey and Couvee
  • Winery “Sever” near Klanjec; offer wines: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Grey, Riesling

Summer outdoor pool

On the restaurant floor, by the restaurant terrace, there is an outdoor pool measuring 7×3 meters, a depth of 1.1 m.

The use of the outdoor pool is unlimited and included in the price for all guests.

Thermal spring water

Thermal water in Krapinske Toplice comes from four hyper thermal water springs, temperature 39-41°C. It contains lots of minerals like Calcium, Magnesium and Hydro carbonate and almost no Sulphur which makes the scent of water so mild. Water has a slight natural radioactive effect which helps with spine, elbow and locomotors system diseases as well as with rheum, sciatica, coronary diseases and vascular and circulation diseases.

According to international water qualification, water is:

  • Hyperthermal – temperature 41°C.
  • It flows from limestone and belongs to akratothermes
  • The amount of dissolved minerals is 450mg/L
  • From chemical perspective:

Cations of:

  • calcium – Ca++ = 52,4 mg/l
  • magensium – Mg++2 = 31,5 mg/l

Anions of:

  • hydrocarbonate – (HCO3)– = 293,0 mg/l
  • sulphate – (SO4)– = 39,7 mg/l

Water is evaluated as the 6th of highest quality water in Europe.

All apartments in Villa Magdalena have a Jacuzzi with direct attach to the thermal water springs (water temperature – 39°C). Wellness services of the hotel are also attached to that direct source of thermal water.

Walking routes

The spa walking ring

On the gentle hills that surrounds Krapinske Toplice there are numerous paths and trails. While walking through the region, you can breathe with your full lungs. Walking the paths helps with health, increases body condition, reduces heart-diseases and helps with medical recovery (with required professional medical control). Due to the demanding level, there are three groups of paths: 

MEDICAL PATHS

Walking these paths represents a pleasant walk, and with adequate program provides the return of some heart and vascular functions to patients as well as making a habit to maintain the current functions to work properly. People with health problems (cardio-vascular disorders) can walk these paths but they are required to contact the doctor before they go for a walk.

RECREATIVE PATHS

Paths are for free movement, relaxation, health maintenance and cardio-vascular diseases prevention. 

TRIM PATHS

Paths that are suitable for increasing body-condition for healthy persons. Beside the exercise-program, walking these paths helps to increase physical preparedness and to preserve strength.

Cycling routes

The path of two springs

Thirty miles or more of picturesque cycling route provides a pleasant ride through the area which links the two sources of health and recreation – Krapinske Toplice and Tuheljske Toplice.

On the both sides of the path there are meadows, fields, vineyards… Beside enchanting natural beauties, the path has many crucifixes called “krajputaši”, numerous churches, chapels and monuments of fallen soldiers. The paths are like a framework of the two springs, and the museums, galleries, castles, two president’s birth-house and numerous sacred objects that are near the path are a reason more to choose this route.

Because of the possibility to combine the local roads with this route, you can adjust it to your physical preparedness.
